americanizing parents, early christmas spirit!
usually on thanksgiving, my family and i just crash the awesome thanksgiving shindig at smallchous. change of plans this year. tired of being the freeloaders, my mom and my aunt decided to have a family thanksgiving instead. (my argument that smallchou is family didnt hold water)
their thanksgiving meal plan? hot pot… you heard me right… a boiling pot of water that you throw things in.
now besides the 4th of july, thanksgiving is probably the most american holiday that we celebrate – a whole day of eating, drinking, and football? and were going to have hot pot? not on my watch mom and dad.
so i went over to casa de chou, and learned how to turn this:
into this:
trust me, it was nothing short of a thanksgiving miracle.
so after the wine and meal at my house, i longboarded over to smallchous – to say hey to his family… aka eat some pie. the day of non-stop wine drinking made for an interesting ride. there sure are a lot of cracks on the roads of los altos.
now im not sure if it was the wine or the tryptophan, but i ended up having the following conversation with an 8 year old.
kid: i love playstation 2. its so fun!
me: yeah its aiite. i have a ps3, i think thats more fun
kid: ps2 is the best!
me: do you have a ps2?
kid: no.
me: do you want mine? ill go home right now and get it for you.
kid: no. i dont want it.
me: didnt you just say how much you loved ps2?
kid: i dont need it.
me: its not about what you need. do you want it? you can have it.
kid: its okay. i dont need it.
now at the time i was having the conversation, i kept thinking, man whats wrong with this kid? im offering him a ps2 and hes rejecting the offer? i have got to be the worst salesperson of all time.
but thinking about it now, that kid is really somethign else – something that we all talk about during the holidays – my own version of tiny tim. to be aware of wants/needs at such a young age is pretty special. i know for a fact that if someone had offered the 8 year old version of me a free ps2, id snatch that up in a heartbeat. i really hope his parents get him something awesome for christmas, he deserves it.

Eh, he was probably still reeling from having his mind BLOWN by the outrageousness of my old baseball card collection.

it was either that, or your stack of comic books that was worth a grand total of $40
