a video game history lesson + super awesome megaman t shirt

October 2nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in design, gaming, reviews, store, tv

video games were painful back in the day. you see, before developers were able to put video games on cds, dvds, and blu ray discs - all which have abundant storage space, they had to cram them into cartridges. these cartridges were pretty primitive and could not hold very much information, which is why back in the day graphics and music were so horrible.

now i could easily deal with crappy graphics and the music grew on me, i was a kid back then, and hdtv, hdmi cables, 1080p, dolby and digital surround sound were all very far into the future. what i couldnt deal with was how frustrating games were in the 80s and 90s. you see, typically, a gamer is satisfied with about 20-30 hours of play time on a single game, or they feel cheated out of their $60. now this is not a problem because developers can simply make the game longer, since the media (dvd and blu ray now) has so much capacity.

back in the day, this was impossible with cartridges. they simply couldnt just add more length to a game, so instead, they made games nearly impossible, especially for little kids. i mean, i never beat super mario brothers until i was in college - too much hand-eye coordination needed.

i was reminded of this when playing megaman 9 (just released on ps3). see, instead of updating the game, capcom brought it back to its roots, so what you have is a level-wise short, but impossible game. how impossible you ask? lets just say that i died 3 times without making it past the first level. i almost threw my dualshock 3 into my hdtv in frustration.

which brings me to todays megaman inspired t shirt design. megaman sucks - not the game, but the character himself. he is weak, starts out every game with a dinky pea shooter, and every single bad guy is stronger, faster and takes more trickeries to beat.

this would not have happened if say, the game centered around mega ninja man. i mean with mega ninja man i could probably finish the game off and kill all the baddies in like 2 hours.

side note on the zazzle store. some of you may not know this, but i leave all of my shirts fully customizable on the store. this means that you can take one of my designs, put it on a mens/womens/kids shirt dark or light, and change all of the text. you can even choose the shirt material, 100% cotton, vintage shirt, heavy duty, etc. the shirts that i have predesigned on the webstore are just a simple guide to what the shirts could look like.

what are they doing in cal football practice?

September 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in sports, tv

i can understand once, but twice? in a span of two weeks? what are they teaching at cal football practice? you have to make it into the endzone with the football in order to score a touchdown.

first, on monday night football two weeks ago, you have desean jackon, cal alum, flipping the ball behind him before he scores in order to prepare for a touchdown dance.

then, yesterday, you have bryant nnabuife clearly flipping the ball over his shoulder before hes in. luckily, the touchdown stood and the announcers refused to acknowledge the possibility of this happening.

so far, i have not been impressed this season. and as you can see, gookie’s dog, bagel feels the same way. jeff tedford, you better get on this epidemic.

team usa is very good at dunking

August 14th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in news, sports, tv

so good in fact, that if the olympics could be won solely on dunks, we would definitely win gold. lebron james would be mvp of the all dunk team. unfortunately, i dont think gold can be won by dunking all the time, so we might need to start playing better.

things we are good at:

  • dunking
  • layups
  • blocking shots
  • being fast
  • looking mean
  • having awesome looking uniforms
  • picking up stupid fouls

things we are not good at:

  • shooting mid range jumpers
  • shooting 3 pointers
  • shooting free throws
  • ok fine, shooting in general

i understand that the ball is a little bit smaller in international basketball, but does it really make that big of a difference?

heres something else i noticed. there i was, watching the game, when this guy checks in for the greek team:

the first thing that ran through my mind?

holy crap. shaq hates kobe so much that he joined the greek squad to play him! this brings the kobe shaq feud to a whole nother level!

turns out it wasnt usa shaq, but greek shaq. some guy named sofoklis schortsanitis. whatever. ima call him greek shaq.

also, happy birthday to my sister. welcome to your mid 20s.

olympic ninja t shirt revisited

August 12th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in design, sports, store, tv

had to repost these designs without the word “olympic” in there. apparently its trademarked. so now i present to you the 2008 summer games ninja t shirts! (i know, it doesnt have quite the same ring to it)

still, last night was a pretty awesome night of olympics action, with more swimming and gymnastics medals. whoo hoo! natalie coughlin from cal and aaron peirsol both won gold, along with aquaman michael phelps.

on a side note, one time, while we were stranded on a boat, my old college roommate aaron asked me if i were stuck on an remote island and could only have three people on the island with me, who would i choose? natalie coughlin made the list, as i could ride on her back while she swam to the mainland. true story.
