The following conversation i had with my mom made it onto the insanely popular blog mymomisafob.com

Mom: Are you going to watch Nightlight?
Me: Um what?
Mom: Nightlight. You know, it just beat the Larry Porrey books.
[Larry Porrey = Harry Potter]
Me: …do you mean Twilight? Probably not.
Mom: Yes, Nightlight. Why not? I remember you like vampire shows, like Buddy.
Me: Mom, it’s Buffy, not Buddy.
Mom: Same things. You know what I mean.

its nba playoff time! who wont be watching? my mom.

were in the thick of the nba playoffs. time for a trip down memory lane and a new t shirt.

one of my fondest memories growing up was watching the nba playoffs with my family, particularly my mom. my parents were not born in the states, and she doesnt work, so her english comprehension, especially listening, is decent, but not great (we have to watch dvds with english subtitles). we didnt have closed captioning back then, and dvds were not around yet, so when we gathered around the tv, there wasnt very much that we could watch.

enter basketball and mjs chicago bulls. the sport was super easy to follow (put the ball in the basket, punching your opponent usually leads to fouls), exciting to watch (look at the dunks!), and did not require much language comprehension.

one thing though: she only watched mjs bulls. and only in the playoffs. regular season? she didnt believe in it.

mom:what are they playing for?
me: seeding.
mom: not the championship?
me: no.
mom: then these games dont count. go to your room and do your homework.

i remember being extremely sad when mj retired for the second time. from previous experience (his first retirement), i knew that we woudlnt be sitting down as a family and watching basketball anymore. for her, if mj wasnt playing, she wasnt watching (its okay though. by this time, dvds were around so we could watch those together)

i guess thats how special of a player he truly was. sure the man could sell some shoes, and make some awesomely great commercials, but so can many other athletes. mj was special enough to make my mom, a non-sports fan, tune into every nba game he played between april and june. not just on tv either. i remember being on summer vacations and having to translate the radio announcers for her so that she could know the play by play.

favorite mj moment? flu game:

because of this, the nba playoffs will always be a special time for me. from hating on the lakers, to last years warriors run, ive had very fond basketball memories from april-junes past.

finals prediction? spurs vs celtics. celtics in 7.

new nba inspired shirt design: nba: where getting ninja-ed happens.

as always, all proceeds go to the glow foundation. help kids go to college.

side note on the zazzle store. some of you may not know this, but i leave all of my shirts fully customizable on the store. this means that you can take one of my designs, put it on a mens/womens/kids shirt dark or light, and change all of the text. you can even choose the shirt material, 100% cotton, vintage shirt, heavy duty, etc. the shirts that i have predesigned on the webstore are just a simple guide to what the shirts could look like.
